Make a Roman mosaic onlineClick on one of these colour blocks to choose a colour. Current:Click anywhere in the mosaic on the left to colour in a square. If you make a mistake, choose white as a colour to remove it. A piece of a Roman mosaic was called a tessera. They were made of natural materials, so the range of colours was limited. If you can't think what to draw, try a Greek key pattern, a geometric pattern or a Roman maze. |
Real Roman mosaics were not necessarily laid in a square grid like this. Different shaped pieces were fitted in to make the more complicated pictures.
The Romans made pictures of gods. They even made pictures of ferocious dogs to 'guard' their houses! These used thousands of tesserae.
