Trailer - Local Elections May 2009

Elections are expected to be held on Thursday 7th May 2009 in 34 English Local Authorities, but the date may be moved to 11th June to coincide with the European Parliamentary Elections. This is essentially a County Council year, but among Unitary Authorities the Isle of Wight has the nature of a county; Bristol has been permanently placed on a unique electoral cycle omitting years divisible by 4; and 5 new Unitary Authorities hold their first elections.

Durham and Northumberland will hold elections in 2009 under Unitary Authority proposals, and Bedfordshire and Cheshire County Councils will be abolished on 1 April 2009. Links will be added to Electoral Change Orders where new division boundaries are being implemented.
